The Schwarzman Center, established thanks to a generous gift from Stephen A. Schwarzman, will be a unique resource at Yale, providing a vibrant social and intellectual hub with daily activities that are a magnet for students and others from around the university and major, periodic events that will unite the entire community. Situated at the axial center of campus in the historic "Commons" complex built to commemorate the university's bicentennial, the Center is the only space on campus of its size and scale and will be renovated and expanded over the next few years. When it reopens in 2020, the Schwarzman Center will be a welcoming place to more than 13,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, and will speak to the particular culture of this very special institution. Students at Yale identify with their own school or residential college; the Center will be the catalyst for students to feel an affiliation that goes beyond a school or college and will foster a sense of belonging to Yale as a university possessing a defining, dynamic, and inclusive culture. The new Center can become a true commons, advancing a sense of "One Yale" and creating an interconnected community.

Programming at the Schwarzman Center will have two main components: an events program that will bring diverse and exciting performances and presentations to Yale and a student-driven aspect that provides a home for the full range of student activities from all of Yale's 14 schools: Yale College, the Graduate School, and the professional schools. Reinforcing its central space and role in campus life, Schwarzman Commons will continue to serve lunch on weekdays for approximately 900 members of the Yale community, and already claims the leading dining program in the country.


As the chief executive officer for the Schwarzman Center, the Managing Director sets the standard for engagement across the entire Yale community and provides a framework and resources for programming that will successfully incorporate exceptional guest artists and thought leaders, as well as the extraordinary richness of student activities. The Managing Director will provide strategic vision for developing and implementing the operational structure and systems to support the Center's programming and student engagement activities. S/He serves as the Schwarzman Center's public voice, articulating its contributions internally and externally, and managing the Center's resources, including staff, finances, and facilities. S/He will be the primary point of contact with Mr. Schwarzman, the donor, and his staff, providing regular reports on plans, challenges, and accomplishments. During construction and final phases of renovation, the Managing Director will be a key contributor to the final planning and overall success of the building project, working closely with Robert A.M. Stern architects and Yale Facilities team.

As the project moves closer to completion, it is expected that the Managing Director will be joined by an Artistic Director who will be responsible for guiding the artistic direction for the Center.

The Managing Director and Artistic Director will be supported by a Program Committee (the donor, the Managing Director, the Artistic Director, and a third individual designated by Yale), an Advisory Council of students drawn from throughout the campus, and an Advisory Committee of internal and external constituents. S/He will need the managerial acumen to manage a complex, ever-changing array of events and programs with a newly formed staff, and the gravitas to manage key internal and external stakeholders.


The Managing Director, eventually in close partnership with the Artistic Director, is responsible for ensuring that the Schwarzman Center is a vibrant, cultural, and intellectual hub for the Yale community, and offers a rich annual program that reflects the needs and interests of Yale University students, implementing this program efficiently, and ensuring fiscal responsibility.


  • Work closely with Robert A.M. Stern Architects and Yale Facilities on building renovation; serve as a liaison between donor and Yale on building updates. Manage ongoing coordination with campus stakeholders and preopening planning.
  • Develop the systems and structure, including technical capabilities, to support Schwarzman Center programming, including the production of visionary large-scale events, as well as daily programming that generates excitement and serves to enhance the reputation of the Schwarzman Center as a unifying and must-visit destination for the campus community.
  • Create and oversee systems for programming and scheduling all Schwarzman Center spaces and events.
  • Devise and oversee innovative uses of technology in the Schwarzman Center that support collective engagement in its activities and expand its programmatic reach.
  • Develop staffing plan; hire, train, manage, and assess direct reports, and ensure effective management of all Schwarzman Center staff.
  • Develop long-range and annual budgets for approval by the Schwarzman Center Program Committee; manage the Center's day-to-day operations in a fiscally responsible manner;
  • Create and manage an institutional branding campaign for the Schwarzman Center and develop and oversee marketing for major individual events in collaboration with the Office of Public Affairs and Communications.
  • Develop and implement fundraising initiatives for special projects in collaboration with the Development Office; steward major donor relationships.
  • Work with Facilities to ensure that the building is maintained appropriately and with the Provost's Office and University Planning to develop capital improvement plans when needed.
  • Work collaboratively with Yale Hospitality to ensure successful coordination of food service and programming functions. Work collaboratively with other Yale offices and departments to ensure effective implementation of events and programs.
  • Represent the Schwarzman Center to all constituencies and in the media, garnering visibility for the Schwarzman Center and its programs and activities.
  • Identify and cultivate Schwarzman Center Advisory Committee members. Provide orientation for new Committee members; participate in Committee meetings; communicate with Committee members about appropriate programming, marketing, fundraising, and financial matters.
  • Convene Schwarzman Center Student Advisory Council meetings.


The Managing Director of the Schwarzman Center reports to the Vice President for New Haven and State Affairs and Campus Development and works closely with the President of the University and the Secretary & Vice President for Student Life. The ideal candidate will have:

  • Leadership skills and the capacity to implement and advance a major new programmatic and physical resource to sophisticated standards.
  • Demonstrated operational management skills, including budget management, allocation of resources, supervision of staff, and organizational development in a complex institutional environment with a unionized staff. Demonstrated success aligning resources with strategic goals in an organization known for creating and presenting innovative, stimulating, and inspiring artistic programs.
  • The ability to collaborate with individuals and groups in a highly decentralized hierarchy - faculty, staff, students, and community members - to leverage their work and to enlist their creative partnership at the Schwarzman Center.
  • Demonstrated record of experience in consensus building; a team builder who has a record of accomplishment of engaging multiple stakeholders in order to achieve ambitious goals.
  • Knowledge of, and interest in, existing and emerging technologies; able to fully integrate digital resources for marketing and communications, ticketing and operational systems, and production and dissemination of content.
  • Intelligence, professional acumen, intellectual curiosity, and a commitment to diversity in all its various forms.
  • Political savvy, ability to thrive under pressure, and superb communication skills.
  • Familiarity with, and an understanding of, Yale's intellectual and creative resources across all disciplines and schools.
  • Deep interest in working with students in multiple capacities (as participants, audience members, workers, advisors, performers, among other roles); experience in higher education and a keen interest in engaging a broad range of students at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Experience in board relations and donor cultivation.
